Its common name comes from the fact that this herb is often eaten by birds of all kinds from domestic poultry to exotic birds such as budgies & parrots.  Chickweed herb is common in gardens, fields & disturbed ground.

In herbal medicine chickweed has been used for itchy skin conditions as well as pulmonary diseases & rheumatic conditions.  This plant contains saponins so will have a soothing effect.
